Building a Community

Our aim is to work with our parents and our wider community to teach children respect not only for themselves and others, but for our world. We want our children to grow up understanding how to care for each other and for our world for future generations, as well as our own.

Promoting community cohesion is about much more than eliminating discrimination, advancing equality and fostering good relations between groups. It is about providing opportunities for people to interact, work together, develop positive relationships and make a contribution to their community. It is about having a common vision and shared values based on democracy, equality, diversity, tolerance, fairness and justice and creating a sense of belonging.

Context

Located on Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast, Newquay’s western edge meets the Atlantic at Fistral Bay. Until the end of the 19th century, the port was famous for pilchards. The town’s present insignia includes four pilchards, while its motto “Ro An Mor” is Cornish for “Gift of the Sea”. Newquay’s harbour and surrounding landscape pays homage to a long tradition of seafaring. Perched on the cliff top above Newquay harbour is a Huer’s Hut, thought to date back to the 14th century. It was used by a huer as a lookout for shoals of pilchards. Upon spotting a shoal the huer would alert the town with cries of ‘Hevva, Hevva!’ (‘Here they are!’) whereupon the townsfolk would drop everything to rush down to the harbour to launch the fleet and prepare to land the tons of fish.

The values of co-operation and working together for the common good have long been embedded in our community.

Valuing community

At Newquay Primary Academy our ethos is firmly community centred. We are inclusive and non-selective, welcoming all children regardless of their individual needs, faith, social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Our curriculum is organised to promote co-operation and understanding across our local community, which we recognise is rapidly changing.

We promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs through its 6 core values: Independence, Equality, Teamwork, Respect, Resilience, Excellence.

Our staff and pupils value:

  • The way in which each person is unique. We value the spiritual and moral development of each child, as well as their intellectual and physical growth. Our curriculum promotes respect for the views of each individual child, as well as for people of all cultures.
  • The importance of each person in our community. Our curriculum topics promote co-operation and understanding between all members of our community.
  • The rights enjoyed by each person in our society. We respect each child in our school for who they are, and we treat them with fairness and honesty. We aim to enable each person to be successful, and we provide equal opportunities for every child in our school.
  • Our unique environment. We aim, through our curriculum topics, to teach respect for our local, national and global world, and how we should care for it for future generations, as well as our own.

A partnership with our parents

At Newquay Primary Academy we know that collaboration between schools, teachers and families strongly influences pupils’ academic achievements, social development and sense of wellbeing at all levels of education. When parents are involved in their children’s education, children do better on a range of measures: their behaviour is better; they have greater self-esteem; their attendance is higher; the risk of exclusion is lower; they are more keen to learn; they achieve better results; the achievement gap between children and young people from different socio-economic backgrounds is reduced. This is why our teachers systematically encourage family involvement and parental participation in the life of our school.

To help build partnerships, we have a full-time Parent Support Adviser whose role is to build positive relationships with all our parents through family support and education workshops and events. Our Parent Support Adviser works particularly closely with parents of our EAL/ SEN children and ensures they are fully consulted, informed and involved. Our Parent Support Adviser also holds regular drop-in clinic and advice sessions and it is an expectation that the Head of School is available every morning at the beginning of the day to meet parents informally. Parent volunteers are also encouraged and their involvement in a wide range of school activities, including extra-curricular clubs, trips, mentoring is welcomed. We hold half termly family learning events such as “Dads and Lads” reading sessions, for example. We also monitor parental engagement annually through questionnaires and interviews.
