"Newquay Primary Academy is co-located with Newquay Tretherras. Both academies are part of Cornwall Education Learning Trust (CELT). Because we share facilities and are part of the same trust we are able to offer a comprehensive and consistent approach to education. We are able to support each child – knowing them well as individual learners, tracking pupil progress and offering consistent pastoral care – for the whole of their learning journey from age 3 to age 18. Opportunities are also offered for our primary pupils to learn in specialist facilities, including science and technology rooms, not accessible to most primary school pupils.
Joining-up education
Newquay Primary Academy is on the same site as Newquay Tretherras secondary school. Our shared educational ethos supports children and young people from age 3-18 and provides consistently high expectations for all.
Both schools are part of Cornwall Education Learning Trust (CELT). CELT is a large, Multi-Academy Trust comprising schools across mid-Cornwall which include Cornwall’s largest 11-18 Secondary Academy (Newquay Tretherras, rated Good and previously Outstanding) and Cornwall’s largest 7-11 Junior Academy (Newquay Junior Academy, rated Outstanding twice). Both these Newquay schools are popular and consistently oversubscribed.
CELT is a cross phase Trust. This distinctive aspect means we can focus closely on ensuring that every child gets off to a flying start with aspirational and challenging targets, making rapid progress as they move through each phase of their education and avoiding performance dips and gaps at key transition points.
For our pupils, the benefits are huge. Student-to-student mentoring, the provision of excellent role models for younger students, leadership and mentoring opportunities to develop confidence, resilience and character, the facility to offer in-house work experience and an overwhelming sense of community and family are all prevalent across both our schools. Opportunities are also offered for primary pupils to learn in specialist facilities, including science and technology rooms, not accessible to most primary school pupils.
For staff, there are opportunities to share best practice. Cross-phase lesson observations create opportunities to learn from one another. Curricula are discussed and reviewed with skills-based learning considered, in addition to knowledge and content. The implementation of one assessment process enhances the quality of data collected, offering improved tracking and monitoring for all students. This creates a shared educational ethos that supports children from age 3 to 18 and provides consistently high expectations for all.
That said, we understand that we need to continue to recognise that primary and secondary pupils are different, and that they should be able to express themselves in different ways. That is why the phases across our joined-up school site retain some sense of their uniqueness and diversity.
Modern, purpose-built facilities
Newquay Primary Academy has been designed as a two-form entry school with capacity for up to 420 children. In addition to our own state-of-the-art two-storey school, outdoor physical education pitch, netball and tennis courts we share facilities with Newquay Tretherras secondary school and are within walking distance of Newquay’s Sports Centre which is operated by CELT.
Newquay Tretherras has recently benefited from a £15m rebuild. The new Quay Building includes 24 modern classrooms, a multi-purpose hall and activity studio. Our primary pupils will benefit from a broad range of specialist facilities for teaching and learning, sport and leisure.
The proximity of the Sports Centre extends the range of sporting opportunities available and enhances our focus on active lifestyles and wellbeing. Extra-curricular opportunities will focus on participation for all, run by Sports Leader pupils from Newquay Tretherras and volunteer parents. Our membership of Newquay Sports Partnership (led by Newquay Tretherras) also enables us to enrich and widen our sporting offer.
